A big shout of appreciation to all the students that helped clean up the area. It shows what a small but dedicated number of people can do. Hopefully there will be more students next time.

Welcome to the SHIP/HOOPS' Blog

CHS students and SHIP/HOOPS are starting several new projects, among them this blog site, making audio/visual presentations, developing substance abuse materials, and using technology in the classroom.

There are many problems and challenges at CHS. Several students wrote the first blog entry and it expresses their concern with several issues.
1) There is no drinking water
2) There is no lunch program
3) There are only a couple of toilets for a student body of more than 600

The Governor of Chuuk State has declared that he will close CHS and turn the property over to the College of Micronesia (COM). Although there are many students and Chuukese who oppose this plan, the Chuuk State School System (CSSS) has taken steps to support the governor's decision. This year CHS was not allowed to enroll any ninth graders. Next year there will be no ninth or tenth grade, and eventually the school will be without students.

All of these problems are on going and the cause of difficulty for students. Another problems is the CHS gym; which is neither substance free or violence free. The gym is a site where alcohol and other substances are consumed. It is also the site of occasional violent acts that threaten the safety of students and nearby residents.

The purpose of schools is to educate young people, to prepare them for life by giving them tools for success. Unfortunately, the existing education system at CHS and throughout the state is failing to do these important things.

It is our hope that this blog site will serve as a way to share students' concerns, written essays, photo assignments, and other news and information. We thank you for taking the time to visit our blog. We welcome suggestions and look forward to hearing from you.
